Visit to Barga Museum

On Saturday, Boghi (our neighbour Bogdanka) came with us to a tour of the Barga Museum, which was a continuation of the earlier tour around Barga a couple of weeks ago, about the History of the Medicis in Barga.

It is the first time we have been in the museum, as it has limited opening in winter, and there was a lot to see, so we must try to go again sometime.  Of considerable interest was the mechanism of the old clock of the Barga Duomo.  Barga-philes all know the prominent 20th century Italian poet who lived nearby Barga and wrote a famous poem called "L'ora di Barga" about the chiming of the hours by the cathedral tower clock which he could hear although not see from his home.  The clock was replaced after he had died, and so our guide was able to explain that this was the actual clock which had chimed the hours which inspired the poem!

Our guide was excited to be able to show us the rusting hulk of the old clock of the Duomo di Barga

  1. The lintel is intriguing. The figures are slightly like the Lewis chessmen.
