Fine Weather

A sunny day last Thursday, so we headed up the valley to the village of Sillano near Piazzo al Serchio - the last town in the Garfagnana.

When we were in the Dolomites in September, we met a couple who live in Lucca.  When we said we were going to stay in Barga for a few months, theyir immediate reaction was to recommend a good restaurant nearby - in Sillano.  We have found this often in Italy - to have strangers recommend an eatery ...

The last time we were in Piazza al Serchio, we were excited to see - and hear - peregrine falcons living on the dolione shown in the first photo.  We didn't see them this time, but we heard their harsh cry when we were further up, in Sillano.

One of the strange Dolioni - limestone rock formations - just outside Piazza al Serchio.

Sillano - just another charming hill town in Tuscany

Sillano - the ancient church with ancient bell-tower.  Note scaffolding - the ubiquitous accompaniment of buildings in this ancient landscape

We managed a walk in the hazel woods, but it was very muddy.  It looked like a commercial wood, as the undergrowth had been cleared - as is seen in the chestnut woods - to allow access for harvesting.
