A sunny day last Thursday, so we headed up the valley to the village of Sillano near Piazzo al Serchio - the last town in the Garfagnana.
When we were in the Dolomites in September, we met a couple who live in Lucca. When we said we were going to stay in Barga for a few months, theyir immediate reaction was to recommend a good restaurant nearby - in Sillano. We have found this often in Italy - to have strangers recommend an eatery ...
The last time we were in Piazza al Serchio, we were excited to see - and hear - peregrine falcons living on the dolione shown in the first photo. We didn't see them this time, but we heard their harsh cry when we were further up, in Sillano.

| One of the strange Dolioni - limestone rock formations - just outside Piazza al Serchio. |
| Sillano - just another charming hill town in Tuscany |
| Sillano - the ancient church with ancient bell-tower. Note scaffolding - the ubiquitous accompaniment of buildings in this ancient landscape |
| We managed a walk in the hazel woods, but it was very muddy. It looked like a commercial wood, as the undergrowth had been cleared - as is seen in the chestnut woods - to allow access for harvesting. |
