Trento

On Sunday, we drove about an hour and a half down to Trento - the capital of the region of Alto-Adige. It was a really beautiful town, and we would happily have spent many more days there.  We stayed in the Grand Hotel Trento, an art-deco building which is really a period piece.

The town has many buildings of medieval and renaissance age.

An oddity seen on the trip - these pyramids are caused by the erosion of soft glacial moraine rock

Our grand hotel, sailing like a ship into Trento like a prop from a Poirot episode ...
The magnificent restored Art Deco foyer of the hotel is really not what we are used to!

In the main square, the Café Italia still sports its frescoes from hundreds of years ago - quite amazing

Another corner of Trento with fescoes and architecture from past ages

About to enter the Castello di Buonconsiglio, another medieval marvel

The pavements though modern, are made of limestones rich in fossils from millions of years ago

The magnificent cathedral, site of the famous Council of Trent - the Roman Catholic church's counterblast to the Protestant Reformation

Castel Toblino - seen along the way from Trento to our new destination - Lake Garda, and the little town of Gargnano
