The Medici in Barga ...

Saturday was a great day of weather, which was so fortunate for the group which had organised a historical walkabout in Barga to describe the influence of the powerful Florentine Medici family had in Barga in the 15th century.  As the tour was in Italian (rapid-fire style!) we were only able to get the gist of the story of the movers and shakers of the Gherardi, Angelio and Balduino families and their respective palazzos ...

The sort of day we've been missing

The autumn leaves look better with a blue sky

Foregathering outside the 16th century villa Gherardi, which today houses the local library downstairs and a hostel upstairs

Finishing off in Piazza Angelio getting the gen on the Palazzo Angelio opposite

Odd corners of Barga 1: an ancient bastion deep in the canyons of the old town - we've never seen it before, and it is a small town!

Od corners in Barga 2:  the lane at the top of which is l'Altana restaurant - the one we go to when we have visitors ...

A gelato reward for all that concentrating and translating!

  1. Lucky you! I recognize several people on the picture in front of Villa Gherardi. I dont remember their names, but the two girls next to Bill are: one (on the left looking at the picture) is the partner of Nicola, above our house, where the funny bike with the sunflowers is. The other girl, on the other side, with a textile bag hanging from shoulders, should be a tourist guide, or better said, THE Barga tourist guide. Did she give the talk?

  2. No, Pietro - but Barbara thinks she was maybe a friend of the tour guide, who is just visible in the distance behind my head (and not a very good likeness of her).

Do you know who is the guy in the distance with the cap? The one on the right? He talked a bit too...

  3. I like the fact you are still seeing bits of Barga for the first time.
